There is a film circulating in youtube of the challenge game take it or leave it, where the presenter asks the question to a couple what nationality was Alexander the Great. he provides two choices 1) Greek 2) Macedonian (using FYROM flag under the choice).. the couple answers Greek and the presenter said it was the wrong answer. then he starts talking about PELLA the birthplace of Alexander (located in Greece). ALexandrer was a Macedonian of Ancient Greece like athenians, spartans and other city states of Greece. Hence of Greek nationality, fact which was proven historically. i have emailed the tv channel the email below and i have received an answer from them accepting the error they made. saying that onnecting MACEDONIA with FYROM was Wron.
My Reply to the Email! Dear
Directors and Owners of the Take it or Leave it Game., i decided to email you
regarding a question on the take it or leave it game
with regards the
nationality of Alexander the great. The couple answered the question correctly,
it is Greek and not Macedonian – ( by not accepting their answer as
correct, is like saying the nationality of someone from London is a Londoner but not
English). Macedonia was part
of ancient Greece,
where the city system government existed, where you had Athenians,
Spartans, Macedonians and many other city states., all Greek but with their own
system of government and yes most of the time were fighting each other.
The
only explanation I have for this faulty answer of yours is the following.
1)
the author(s) of the questions are from FYROM, or you read an encyclopaedia
from a FYROM born author
2)
you were checking the internet for answers and questions. which in
many cases it may be a trap since there are a lot of unreliable sources.
Google number 1 websites are not always the most objective and reliable source
of information.
3)
your researchers confused the country FYROM – which call them selves as
Macedonians" with the Macedonians of Ancient Greece. Those two have
nothing in common. And the Slavs (Fyrom) moved there centuries after the death
of Alexander the Great.
I
can spend unlimited time informing about the history of Greece and the city government system it
had especially the one of Athens, Sparta, Macedonia,
and many others. Additionally Pella which
the presenter mentioned a the place Alexander was born is located in modern Greece
Furthermore
the so called todays " Macedonians" of the country FYROM,
were not at the area at the time Alexander the great lived, but moved
there centuries after. Additionally, the language of Alexander the great was
Greek while the ones in FYROM always spoke a Slav dialect.
Do
an independent research, read books, check the encyclopaedias, Alexander the
great was Greek and his nationality was Greek, the same applies for
Athenians, and the Spartans. Socrates nationality, was Greek not Athenian
, Leonides of Sparta (300) was of Greek Nationality not a Spartan..
A Londoner has a nationality and is English or British, not a Londoner .
The
show and its video almost created a cold war tension between Greece and FYROM –(both
countries are still in negotiations under UN for the Name of FYROM). Also do a
search in the internet you will understand what tension this show has done
I
personally believe that you should apologize for the error you made, and give
the people their money because their answer was correct. Also you should check
the team who prepares the questions and see if you have anyone biased inside
Thanks for reading my letter and I hope you will avoid
similar errors in the future-
Take it or Leave it Answer!!!Dear Yiannis, Thank you for your patience while
we’ve looked into all of this.
The clip on YouTube is from an episode of Take It Or Leave It from over two
years ago.
We want you to understand that we do not want to take sides in any
international disagreement – contrary to lots of the opinions that have
been put to us via email and in the web forums. To be totally clear: we're not
trying to promote a cause, or stir up any trouble.
We do recognise the importance of conducting quizzes fairly though, which is
why we’ve gone back and checked our paperwork. On the question itself, we have looked
back at the records, and subject to procedure this was checked with two trusted
sources.
However, one of the main issues you’ve raised is the use of the flag of
FYROM to illustrate the question and answer. Having heard many of your
arguments on this, and having looked into it ourselves, we can see that this
was inaccurate, and confusing for the audience. We unreservedly apologise for
any offence that has been caused - that was certainly not our intention.
It is very obvious that this particular question is about ancient history, not
modern-day Europe. Using modern day flags is
therefore inappropriate, so we’re going to re-edit this particular
episode so that the flags are not shown again.
We hope that this goes a long way to addressing people’s concerns, and
completely removes any suggestion that we’re making some kind of
political statement. We’re sorry to have got this wrong.
Kind Regards,
tigeraspect productions
